Habinteg winner of Best Disability Initiative at NI Equality and Diversity

02nd October 2020

Habinteg were thrilled to be named Winner of the Best Disability Initiative in the NI Equality and Diversity Awards 2020.

The Equality and Diversity Awards, organised by Legal Island and sponsored by Jones Cassidy Brett Solicitors and AIB, are a unique event in Northern Ireland. Now into their fourth year, they provide organisations with an opportunity to showcase a commitment to advocating equality and diversity and Habinteg are delighted to have been shortlisted in each of those years.

Habinteg’s winning nomination this year was for the extension to its flagship supported housing development at Millburn Close in Belfast, developed in partnership with Inspire Wellbeing and the Belfast Trust. Millburn Close is widely viewed as a model of excellence in supporting individuals with enduring mental illness, to experience flourishing wellbeing and offering equality, choice and rights in all aspects of housing needs rather than insecure temporary placements in hostels, hospital or nursing care. The new extension adds a further 6 apartments to the original 20 dwelling development, set in a quiet cul-de-sac, and including a staff / communal facility and drop-in centre.

Speaking of the Award, Habinteg’s Chief Executive, Darren McKinney, said ‘At Habinteg we recognise the importance of embracing and valuing diversity and understand how it can make us stronger, more resilient and sustainable and promote continuous improvement. All our employees have a responsibility to ensure our Equality and Diversity policy is put into practice and are expected to make a personal commitment to adopting this in their day to day work activities.’

This year, the traditional Gala ceremony was understandably impacted and the 2020 Awards was a virtual event - Digital Diversity Awards - launched on 4 September, hosted by Sarah Travers and Legal Island Chairman, Barry Phillips. Despite the change in procedure, the entry criteria was in keeping with previous years and the standard of entries and judging just as high. Awards spanned nine different categories; Best Employer (Large) for Equality and Diversity in NI, Best Employer (Small) for Equality and Diversity in NI, Best Age Initiative, Best Disability Initiative, Best Gender Initiative, Best LGBT Initiative, Best Race Initiative, Best First Initiative and Individual Diversity Champion.

Along with partners at Inspire Wellbeing and the Belfast Trust Habinteg are proud to receive the award and look forward to continued involvement and support for the Equality and Diversity Awards in Northern Ireland.
