Picturing the Future

25th June 2018

MLAs from all the main parties joined members of our staff, representatives of Greater Whitewell Community Surgery (GWCS) and pupils from three schools in North Belfast for the public unveiling of a superb piece of children’s artwork at Habinteg’s new apartments on Whitewell Road.

The artwork, installed at our new Whitewell development, consists of individual ceramic plaques each created by pupils from local primary schools - St. Mary’s Star of the Sea, Hazelwood and Lowwood - and depicting their shared community. It is the result of a collaborative project jointly funded by ourselves and Connolly & Fee as part of their Considerate Contractors initiative, and generously supported and facilitated by GWCS. The children produced the artwork over a series of cross community workshops at GWCS with artist Dr Eleanor Wheeler, Youth Provider Leah Blaney, APP (Achieving Personal Potential) facilitator Irma Makin and our Community Involvement Officer, Melanie Rintoul. It underlines the commitment to an inclusive society from those who live in the area and those who are supporting them. As Geraldine O’Kane, Manager of GWCS said ‘Without the support of the Executive Office and the International Fund for Ireland and the willingness of the families to come together these cross community programmes would not be possible’.
Beautifully created by the children, this vibrant piece of public art provides the final touch to the transformation of the site at Whitwell Road into 10 modern, stylish apartments and will remain in place as a fitting symbol of a new shared space and shared community; picturing the future.
